All construction contractors and subcontractors must register with the Department of Labor and Industry if they have employees. Those contractors without employees may register, but are not required to do so.

If you're a licensed electrician or plumber and work only in those trades, you don't need to register with the Department. You do need a Montana license, though. See below for more information on these trades.
Contractor's registration fees: You won't have to take an exam to
register with the Department. Registration costs $53 and it's good for two years.
Electrician's Licenses
To do electrical work in Montana, you must get a license. Montana licenses electrical contractors, master, journeyman, and residential electricians. To apply for a license, contact:

Electrical Contractor's License
To qualify for an electrical contractor's license, you must have a master electrician's license you got by testing in Montana or employ a licensed master electrician who will be responsible for the electrical work you do. You don't have to pass an exam to get a contractor license. The license costs $250 and it's good for three years.
You will have to pass an exam to get a master, journeyman, or residential electrician's license. The exam is given by LaserGrade. For information on the exam and to locate a testing center, contact:

Master Electrician's License
To apply for the master electrician's exam you must prove you can meet one of these three requirements:
Journeyman Electrician's License
To apply for a journeyman electrician's license you must prove you can meet either of these two requirements:
No more than 4,000 hours can be in residential construction. Remaining hours must be in commercial, industrial, or institutional construction. The Board may give you credit for hours you spend in a recognized electrical trade school.
Residential Electrician's License
To apply for a residential electrician's license you must prove you can meet either of these two requirements:
Electrician's license fees: It will cost you
$120 (includes initial license fee) to file
an application for a license. An exam will cost you $75.
Renewals are every three years.
If you can submit verification from a licensing agency in a state with qualification at least equal to Montana's (Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Oregon, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming), and you received the license in that state by testing and scoring at least a 75%, you can apply to get a Montana journeyman license without taking an exam. You'll still need to pay a $145 fee and submit an application for the license.
Plumber's Licenses
To do plumbing work in Montana you must get a license. To apply for a license, contact:

The Board licenses master and journeyman plumbers. You must pass an exam given by the Board to get a license.
Master Plumber's License
To qualify for a master plumber's license you must prove you meet these requirements:
Journeyman Plumber's License
To apply for a journeyman plumber's license you must prove you have five years of practical plumbing work experience or have a voucher completed by an active licensed master plumber.
Plumber's license fees: It will cost you $30 nonrefundable to file an
application for a license and $95 to take an exam. A master license costs $125 and a
journeyman license costs $75. Licenses expire September 1st each year.
Montana has reciprocity with North Dakota, Oregon and Idaho on the journeyman plumbing license. If you provide a letter of verification from the licensing agency in North Dakota or Idaho you can get a Montana journeyman license without taking an exam. You still need to pay the application fee of $30 and the $95 reciprocity fee for the license.
Department of Transportation (DOT)
The Montana Department of Transportation doesn't prequalify contractors. To bid on highway construction projects in Montana you must get a license through the Montana Department of Labor. See the beginning of this section for more information.
