Asbestos Abatement License and Certificates

If you work with asbestos in New Hampshire you must be certified and/or licensed by the New Hampshire Bureau of Health Risk Assessment. The Bureau issues an asbestos abatement contractor license, and certificates to asbestos workers and supervisors. It also certifies inspectors, management planners, and project designers who work on school buildings.

Asbestos Abatement Project Designer Certificate

To qualify for an project designer certificate you need to:

1. twelve months asbestos abatement work experience and a bachelor's degree in industrial hygiene, occupation, health, environmental science, biological science, or physical science
2. twelve months asbestos abatement work experience and be a registered architect or engineer
3. two years asbestos abatement work experience including asbestos abatement design

Lead Abatement License and Certificates

If you work in lead abatement in residential dwellings or child care centers in New Hampshire, you must be certified and/or licensed by the New Hampshire Bureau of Health Risk Assessment. The Bureau issues a license for lead abatement contractors and certificates for lead workers and supervisors. It also certifies inspectors, management planners, and project designers who work on school buildings.

Electrician's Licenses

The Board issues master and journeyman licenses and apprentice identification cards. They also require you to pass an exam to get a license.

To qualify for the master's licensing exam you must work as a New Hampshire-licensed journeyman for at least one year.

To qualify for the journeyman's licensing exam you need 8,000 hours of work experience and an Associate Degree in Electricity (or Board-approved equivalent). You can use your schooling for up to one year of the work experience requirement.

To qualify for an apprentice electrician identification card you need to register as an apprentice with the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training of the U.S. Department of Labor or a state apprenticeship agency. The Board may accept out-of-state work experience and education for any of these requirements.

The journeyman and master exams have two sections. One section has 25 questions based on the National Electrical Code. The other section has 50 questions based on:

If you have a license in Massachusetts, Vermont, or Maine, you can apply for a New Hampshire license by reciprocity. You'll still need four years of work experience and you have to pay the licensing fees. You can't get reciprocity if you've ever failed a New Hampshire electrician's exam.

Plumber's Licenses

You need a license to do plumbing work in New Hampshire. To get an application for a license, contact:

The Board issues master, journeyman, and apprentice licenses. They also require you to pass an exam to get a license. To qualify for the master's licensing exam you must work as a licensed journeyman for at least six months. To qualify for the journeyman's licensing exam you need to complete a Board-approved apprenticeship program which includes four years of work experience and four years of education. If you have a license in another state, you can apply for the journeyman exam without completing the apprenticeship program. If you have a license from the state of Vermont or Maine you can get a license in New Hampshire by just paying the New Hampshire license fees.

The master and journeyman exams are 100 multiple-choice questions and are based on the following content areas.

Department of Transportation (DOT)

Some of the details the Department will ask you about are your organization, personnel, financial condition, equipment, and experience. You'll be asked what type of work you want to be qualified for:

Road construction Site work
Bridge construction Building
Paving Other

Prequalification is good for 15 months from the date of the financial statement you send the Department when you apply for prequalification.
